Presentation Nerves

Different shades of blueThis week is reading week, time to study from home and complete the usual weekly tasks asked for by Steve. After reading my assignments last week and compiling some questions, I may want to ask, I’m getting myself stuck into my individual task.

After emailing Steve yesterday morning, I set about researching and preparing myself for next Monday. My task is to prepare a five-minute presentation for Monday 5th November, to present to my class using a visual aid and handouts on a colour chosen for me by Steve. My chosen colour is BLUE. My presentation can contain facts and figures about my colour and mention the different psychologies and symbolism the colour represents around the world in different aspects of life. E.g. religion.

At first, I was disappointed with my chosen colour, I wanted to trade with
John as he has my favourite colour, PURPLE. However, that’s not allowed. The task itself is great; I’m really getting my teeth stuck into it and researching heavily into my subject so that I know it inside out for next week. Until this task, I didn’t realise the effect a colour that I put onto a website or a logo can have on different people. The religious interpretations on a colour could offend some people if not used considerately.

The presentation is another matter; I’m absolutely daunted by the issue of presenting to the whole class. I know that this is normal and that everyone gets nervous before presentations so I’m trying to not let it get to me too much. Throughout the rest of the week, I’m going to practise my presentation to my family to test the time duration and see how it fits within the five-minutes (with a fault of 30 seconds either way) we’ve been given.

Another task we’ve been given is to read through and retrospectively apply a set of definitive communication guidelines to our journals. These will be uploaded for 6pm tomorrow, so I need to check the
Communications URL provided for these and implement them as required.

So, in conclusion, for next week I need to:

  • Research into my chosen colour more.
  • Prepare a computer-aided presentation in Pagemaker/InDesign.
  • Prepare handouts for the whole class.
  • Practise my presentation and refine if needed.
  • Remember to start strong, speak clearly, make eye contact and finish strong.
  • Implement communication guidelines to my journal.
  • Ensure I have the correct number of comments made to my classmates that are relevant.

Thanks for reading.
Sue.

It is very interesting how differently countries and people interpretive colours. I had some idea that different countries used colours for different things, but not to the extent they actually do.

P.S
I’ve got the same colour as you!

I was the same as you I was disappointed with my colour, but once I had started researching it I got right into it and I have learnt quite a lot on how yellow has different effects on people in different cultures. It has also made me learn more about different cultures and traditions which I have found interesting to learn about.

The URL is now uploaded. A day early. Ineffective use of time! Guilty.

I also got given blue for my colour presentation in the first year. It is interesting to find out what it means in different cultures, and as web designers it is essential to know what they mean overseas.

If your target audience for a site was in another country, you would need to know which colours suit their culture best. It may be worth putting a bit of the presentation into an interactive media context, to provide even more relevance.

I am also daunted about presentating in front of the class but I feel that a good idea as it will only help us all to improve our presentation skills as we will be able to gain feedback from the group.

i was also disapointed with my colour, i would have preferred to have green. but as i did more research i found thats there is alot of stuff about this colour that is quite interesting, iv had to cut a few things out of the presentation because i think it would have gone over 5 mins.

Hi, thanks for mentioning me in your blog entry and to be quite honest given the chance I would swap colours with you. But its a little late on at this moment in time dont you think??? And there the part where steve expects to do with what we are given..

And a bit of useful advise about presentations (hopefully) In my opinion a presentation is just like putting on a new pair of shoes. Sure its different to begin with but in time you adjust. I see presentations as a learning experience that is critical in the design industry and seen as that where im heading towards, it is essential that I get it right.

I have personally done 1 or 2 presentations in the previous courses at Wakefield college so i may have a slight advantae over some student that may not have done so. They are a doddle, trust me!!!

Hi All

I completely agree about what you are saying about the colour research it is very interesting to find out what colours were used for. I have found out so much information from this, I will gladly show you it all on Monday especially if we are all doing the presentations in the same room so we can all see each others work. Blue is an interesting colour it was used as the American army colour 100s of years ago, I researched many colours not just ,my own as I found it so interesting.

Another point im agreeing with others about is that this presentation has allot to do with target audience. For example brown would be used for a nature, health food and army websites. I’m glad we got this assignment, though personally I can not wait to stick this information into my sketch book.

Hi Sue

I think that everyone will agree that this project, although perhaps not at the beginning, is one that has generated a large amount of interest within the group.

I think that the presentation is almost like the evaluation stage.

To be honest, I'm really looking forward to it.

I felt exactly the same last year when we had to do our colour presentations. Because this was my first real experience of this I was incredibly nervous.

I really benefitted by rehearsing and getting as much practice in as I could. I felt much more confident after doing this and I am also doing this today for our presentations this week! Good luck!
